Long Scraggy Peak 8x10 oil
PAAC Paint out at Dawson's Butte. I decided to try a different approach today, and use only dabs of color on the entire painting.  I started with a dry toned canvas, and lightly sketched the scene with gray pastel pencil.  Then I mixed four piles of paint for the general colors - dark mountain, light mountain, trees, and sky.  I compared the value and tone on the palette before painting.  I painted spots of the four colors, then mixed and added more different tones as needed.  This painting went very fast, and I love the thick juicy dabs of paint.

Shrine Pass Afternoon 8x10 oil
Shrine Pass Morning 8x10 oil
I hiked up Shrine Pass with Cheryl St. John and three other painters.  It was in the 60s, a welcome relief from the 90-100 degree temperatures in town.  I spent several hours on the morning painting, and just about an hour on the afternoon one.  The sound of approaching rain storms encouraged me to paint very quickly!  As we hiked down, it rained for about five minutes, then cleared.

Alpine Garden 9x12 oil
I spent the day painting in Vail with Cheryl St. John and four other artists, at the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens.  I was attracted to the tall dark blue Delphiniums on the right, with the orange flowers in the foreground.  It's a great place to paint, with many beautiful views.  It was fun to see and hear the hummingbirds zip by.

Sunset at Daniels Park 8x10 oil
PAAC evening Paint Out.  There's a great view of the front range from the park.  A person could paint ten of these side by side, and still not run out of mountains to paint. I set up before the sunset, and painted the land first.  Then I waited for color to appear in the sky and painted it quickly.

Old Louisville Inn 8x10 oil
PAAC Paint Out.  I decided to join the Boulder group in the morning, since the Castle Rock group Paint Out was in the evening.  I sat in the shade with two watercolor artists, and painted the Inn.  A few people appeared around lunchtime, so I put them in.  The challenge with this one was capturing all of the different shades of red and green.

Behind the Hogback 12x16 oil
PAAC Paint Out at Matthews/Winters Park.  I hiked up the trail until I could see a view of the front range looking south.

Waterfall On the Platte 8x10 oil
PAAC Paint out at Overland Pond Park.  I decided to tackle the waterfall, and was soon joined by Jon and Rodgers.  The sound of the water rushing over the rocks was very loud.  It was fun to see how each of our paintings came together.

Paddle Boats 8x10 oil
PAAC Paint Out at Washington Park.  It was a hot morning, so I found a cool spot in the shade of the boathouse. I was attracted to the bright colors of the paddle boats reflected in the water.
