Sharptail Ridge Block-In 6x12, oil

Sharptail Ridge 6x12, oil
PAAC Paint Out.  I used a small canvas with a wide format today.  It was cloudy and the light stayed pretty consistent.

Juniper Pass Morning View 12x16 oil
Juniper Pass Afternoon View 12x16, oil
PAAC Paint out.  It was a very pleasant day at the pass, about 70 degrees, a little hazy, and the air was very still.  I painted the morning scene with a palette knife, and the afternoon scene with a brush.

Abstract 20x24 oil
I just felt like playing with the paint today.  I layered color on the canvas with a palette knife, then scraped off the excess paint.  This reminds me of a bouquet of flowers.  I may use it as a backdrop for another painting, or leave it as is.

Red Rocks View 11x14 oil
Denver Plein Air Arts Fest at Red Rocks Park.  I've been to Red Rocks many times, but never when I wasn't attending a show.  How nice to be able to park close and explore the area!  I found a great view of downtown Denver - it was fun to paint the skyline in contrast with the rocks.

Hidden Mesa Sunset 9x12 oil
PAAC sunset Paint Out.  My energy level was high because I was running late and had to hurry down to Castle Rock before the sun went down.  I decided to have some fun with this one and use bold color and strokes.  It was kind of a release for me after painting the last two very detailed paintings.

Mansion Garden 11x14 oil
Denver Plein Air Arts Fest at Grant Humphreys Mansion.  This was a fun event, with quite a few artists attending.  I've lived here all of my life, but never been to the Mansion.  This area caught my eye with the daylilies and the grasses glowing in the morning sun.  I enjoyed visiting with the other artists, and made some new friends.

Don's Chairs 20x24 oil
Don Sahli's garden.  This was a great session.  My goal was to paint more quickly and loosely.  It was very helpful to get tips from Don along the way.

Flowers in the Park, 11x14 oil
Denver Plein Air Arts Fest at the Capitol and Civic Center park.  I tried this one with no medium, just straight paint from the pallette.  I think that made the colors brighter, but it was harder to block it in quickly.

Homestead 9x12 oil
PAAC Paint Out at Castlewood Canyon.  The view of the landscape through the window of the homestead ruins caught my eye, so I decided to make that the focal point.  The shadows on the building changed quite a bit by the time I was done, but I kept them where they were at the start.

Monument Morning 11x14 oil
I stopped again at Colorado National Monument before heading back to Denver.  It was a beautiful, calm morning and I was able to take my time and add details to the rocks and mountains.

Monument Afternoon 12x16 oil
I spent the weekend with a friend in Grand Junction, and arrived early on Friday to paint at Colorado National Monument.  You can see Grand Junction in the distance.  It was windy and I only had a couple of hours, so I painted this quickly.

Waterton Canyon 8x10 oil
PAAC Paint Out. As we approached this area, we could hear a marmot screeching - he sounded like a car alarm.  Then a couple of foxes crossed the road.  Once things calmed down, we found a shady spot along the road to paint the canyon.

O' Fallon Park 16x12 oil
PAAC Paint Out.  I tried another pointillist painting, in a larger size.

Genesee View 12x24 oil
I joined a friend at Genesee Park, and we had great views in both directions to paint.  I tried a wide format for this one - it really works well for panoramic views.
